The importance of geology for wetland delineations
When undertaking a wetland delineation, an important consideration is the underlying geology. If the underlying geology has a dark colouration, this is a sign of oxidised soils representative of anoxic conditions common in wetlands. Conversely if the underlying soils are more orange this is a sign that the soils are aerobic and not representative of wetlands. The vegetation overlying the soils of course will enable you to better determine the wetland status but be sure you have consulted the pasture exclusion list as some pasture species can tolerate inundation and have been planted deliberately for pasture management on farms.
